Support for Special Educational Needs

Miss Bambridge is the Special Educational Needs and/or disability co-ordinator (SENDCo) here at King's Oak Primary.  She is responsible for the co-ordination of Special Educational Needs throughout the school. It is her job to ensure that, as a school, we are following the Code of Practice as well as ensuring all practice in school is in line with our Special Educational Needs Policy.

A child has special educational needs if he or she has a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her.  Special educational provision means educational or training provision that is additional to, or different from, that made generally for others of the same age in a mainstream setting in England.

Some children who have SEND may also have a disability under the Equality Act 2010 - that is '....a physical or mental impairment which has a long-term and substantial adverse effect on their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities'.

However, it should be noted that not all pupils who have disabilities have special educational needs and not all pupils who have special educational needs have a disability.

The school admits pupils identified as having SEND subject to the admissions arrangements. (See Admissions Policy).

Governors are mindful to monitor and improve our facilities as necessary to ensure equal access and full participation for all pupils.  (See Accessibility Plan).

Miss Bambridge liaises regularly with staff, children and parents to ensure that children are given the most appropriate support/resources for their individual needs.

Where a possible difficulty has been identified and the need for additional support has been discussed with parents, assessed, undertaken and reviewed; it may then be necessary to request external agency assessment and support.  A large part of the role means working closely with external agencies to gain specialist advice and support for individual children.

The support of pupils with SEND normally takes place within the classroom and intervention groups.   We have a team of experienced Teaching and Learning Assistants, and our Inclusion Team's Learning mentors who provide invaluable support for all our children.

Gifted & Talented

When children are identified as Gifted or Talented, their needs are met by providing appropriate extension and enrichment work within the lesson. In upper Key Stage 2, pupils are set in ability groups for mathematics.
