Being able to read and write is one of the greatest life skills that we can give children at primary school and we are passionate in ensuring that this is the case at King’s Oak.
Writing
Writing Intent
We have a carefully planned curriculum in writing which covers the full breadth of the National Curriculum. Learning is progressive and links are made to support children knowing and remembering more: this helps to prepare them for the next stage of their learning and education.
At King’s Oak Primary School, we strive to help our children show excellence and develop into articulate and imaginative communicators, who are well-equipped with the basic skills they need to become life-long learners; English learning is key in this.
We intend to do this in this by:
- Children developing a genuine love of language and the written word, through a text-based approach; this links closely to the way we teach reading, as the text that we use in writing lessons, where possible, is the same text as the one that we use in guided reading lessons.
- Exposing our children to high quality texts that model excellent writing practises across a broad range of genres and themes relevant to them, building on their citizenship, cultural capital and understanding of the world around them.
- Our children to have a secure understanding of the purpose of a text type, the purpose and intended impact of writing skills/tools and the ability to carefully select vocabulary with focus on the desired effect on the readers’ thoughts and feelings so that the impact of their writing is positive.
- Making careful links across the curriculum to ensure that children’s English learning is relevant and meaningful: where possible linking our reading, writing and the topic that we are covering in History and Geography.
- Ensuring that children develop an understanding of how widely writing is used in everyday life and, therefore, how important and useful the skills are that they are learning.
- Creating writers who can re-read, edit and improve their own writing, and enable pupils to be able to confidently use the essential skills of spelling, punctuation and grammar.
- Setting high expectations for all our children to take pride in their work and have a fluent, cursive handwriting style alongside their imaginations to flourish.
- Being inclusive of all children by providing the appropriate scaffolding, support and writing tools those children need in their writing process to experience success.
- Targeting the highest possible number of children attaining the expected standard or higher.
We have high expectations of all children and we encourage children to challenge themselves and demonstrate excellence in all they do.
Reading
Reading Intent
At King’s Oak Primary School, we believe that reading is an essential life skill and we are committed to enabling our children to become lifelong readers.
At the heart of our strategy, is our drive to foster a love of reading, enriching children’s learning through carefully designed teaching activities that utilise imaginative stories and thought provoking texts.
Reading is a skill that enables children to develop their learning across the wider curriculum and lays the foundations for success in future lines of study and employment. We recognise the importance of taking a consistent whole-school approach to the teaching of reading in order to maximise progress and close any gaps and to target the highest possible number of children attaining the expected standard or higher.
We have high expectations of all children and we encourage children to challenge themselves.
Read Write Inc
At King’s Oak, we use Read Write Inc across the school to develop our pupils' phonics skills. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions about this.
We often hold RWI parent events, where our Reading Lead demonstrates how to support your children best at home and will be on hand to answer any questions you may have. Dates of these events will be announced on Class Dojo.
